"MAR DE LUNAS"
Concerto for flamenco guitar and orchestra

This composition for flamenco guitar and orchestra was completed in the summer of 2002 thanks to a commission from Oscar Herrero, the concert flamenco guitarist to whom it is dedicated.

From the beginning it was obvious that the work should include, as it does, certain flamenco forms- palos- and rhythms. But as I was creating it, it became more necessary for me to seek the aromas and reflections which this style of music evokes in me, rather than to strictly use the flamenco structures. Besides this there is the guitar, the real soul of the work, which assumes the role of solo concert instrument, employing all of its breathtaking strength of expression, giving shape to the composition and acting as the driving force. At other times, it is at the service of the piece, thus reminding us of the origin of the flamenco guitar.

FRAN VILLARRUBIA (Composer)

“MAR DE LUNAS” A work which has seen the light of day thanks to the insistence of Oscar Herrero in his drive to dignify flamenco. We wish to share this project with orchestras from around the world.

“MAR DE LUNAS” is also presented in an adaptation for instrumental ensemble comprising string and wind quintets, 2 percussionists, conductor and the flamenco guitar of Oscar Herrero.

FLAMENCO EXPRESSIONS

OSCAR HERRERO Flamenco Guitar
Pedro Esparza Flute, Sax and Bag-Pipe
Bruja Perdomo Moorish and Latin Percussion

Oscar Herrero’s new stage work "Hechizo" is filled with original sensations to explore without losing sight of flamenco’s traditional strengths and passion. Both traditional and ground breaking, "Hechizo" presents contemporary flamenco sounds and expressions with a refreshing and profound temperament: innovative and distinctive Flamenco. Caribbean rhythms, classical brushstrokes, moorish secrets... rich musical details which transport us to that magical flamenco realm.

On stage Oscar Herrero´s guitar mastery is accompanied by two exceptional musicians. The voice of a “cantaor” (singer) is represented by the sax and bag-pipe, instruments reminiscent of the flamenco vocal style. The flute adds a touch of modern evolution, and a framework of percussion in the sound of the darbuka, djembe, drums, bongo and chequere transforms this concert for instruments into a beautiful rainbow of flamenco rhythms and elements.

Passages of a new concept where the essential aspects of flamenco, the essence, the roots of a great and beautiful culture stand out and are enriched in "Hechizo" with the elegant sound of a prestigious concert guitarist and flamenco musician.
